What I do
Amy and Michelle were friends throughout their M.B.A. graduate program at the University of Colorado, and often shared their desire to be successful entrepreneurs. They started Amy Michelle so they could design and manufacture baby bags to reflect a woman’s style, while accommodating the daily needs of both baby and mom. Their goal is to brand Amy Michelle as a premier mommy-baby bag designer in the world.

My Story
Amy Wright and Michelle Herbert founded their own business, Amy Michelle Bags in 2003. The goal of Amy Michelle Bags is to accommodate the travel needs of both the baby and mom and be fashionable at the same time. The saturated markets of baby products and women handbags did not offer an organized, functional baby bag that was also sophisticated and elegant. "Instead, a mom who chose organization and function, sacrificed her style and elegance; a mom who chose elegance and sophistication, sacrificed organization and function," Herbert added. "Motherhood requires many important sacrifices, but we believe choosing a baby bag should not be among them." Wright and Herbert, were friends throughout their M.B.A. graduate program at the University of Colorado, and often shared the desire to be successful entrepreneurs. But it was not until after Michelle had her second child, and joined Amy for dinner, that their calling came into focus. Michelle removed her day planner from her bag—an attractive, expensive designer bag marketed as a baby bag—only to have some of her baby's necessaries and personal items spill onto the restaurant floor. Wright, who was heading the U.S. division of an Asian bag manufacturer and managing a Direct Import program for Target, commented that although Michelle's bag was pretty, it lacked organization and function. Amy wondered why Michelle chose to carry it. Michelle explained there were a variety of "diaper bags" with plenty of space to store bottles, diapers, a change of clothes for the baby and the like. And there were a few designer bags that were stylish and fashionable, but none provided the organization and function a mom needs. Later conversations with friends and their market research confirmed Michelle was not alone in her shopping experience, and thus the foundation for this company was born. Since baby and mom are infrequently separated during the first few years—whether traveling to the local market, to a friend's home or on an extended trip—a busy mom should not be required to carry two different bags, a diaper bag and handbag. Amy Michelle mommy-baby bags allow mom's to stay organized in the front Mommy section, while keeping baby essentials in the middle and changing compartments.

I am a bit tardy with my Sam’s Club blog, but it is summer and the kids are out – so, better late than never. We did our first Sam’s Club Road Show in June. Wow! – What and experience. We learned a lot about corporate America and membership clubs and thought we would share. First off, the folks at Sam’s are incredibly nice. From the buyers in Arkansas to the employees at the club here in Colorado, everyone was just wonderful to work with from start to finish. If you are interested in doing your own road show, we totally encourage you to contact Sam’s. They are absolutely FANTASTIC! Take note though, they are a huge corporation (like you did not know that) get ready for tons of time spent on their monstrosity of a computer system called Vendor Access (I have nicknamed it the evil beast). Other than the beast, everything was very easy to navigate and the process was very easy. As for the membership, they were great too. Some of them came blazing through with list in hand and ran right past us, but most were very interested to see what was new. It did not hurt that I had a copy of our SAM WALTON EMERGING ENTREPRENEUR AWARD laminated and hanging from our booth. J I encourage each of your with tangible products to go for it. They were fantastic!

We have our booth ready to go, our diaper bags stacked and have even designed special Amy Michelle shirts for our show. Now we just have to set up and sell, sell, sell. Both Amy and I are excited for the opportunity to show the Sam’s club members the women Count Me In and Sam Walton supports. I even made a copy of our Sam Walton Emerging Entrepreneur Award to post in our booth. After many, many, many hours of laborious paperwork required to work with such a large organization, I think our efforts will be rewarded. I certainly hope so. We will keep you posted as the Road Show progresses.

During the award ceremony, we met Susan Koehler, Vice President of Sam's, and asked if it would be possible to include us in a future road show at Sam’s. She was gracious enough to put us in contact with the Road Show buyer in Arkansas. After months of completing paperwork (sisters, this is a fulltime job), we have finally scheduled our first road show with Sam's Club in Colorado. It will occur June 25-28th.The folks at Sam's have been amazing to work with and are very much rooting for our success. I did not expect this kind of spirit from such a large corporation, but they have genuinely welcomed us. None of this would have been possible with Count Me In. They opened the door for us and now it is our turn to run through it. Thanks Nell and those at CMI and Sam's.We will keep you posted on our road show adventure. I urge any other Sam Walton Emerging Entrepreneurs that have tangible products to give it a try. My hope is to see us all succeed!
