7. What to Know Before you Buy

  1. VoIP services for businesses can be a great cost saver, but there can be a few drawbacks to using this type of system.  If you are making that final decision between VoIP and traditional, or “landline” based phone systems, such as a KSU or PBX system, here are some things you might want to consider:

    Power Outages

VoIP systems operate using an internet connection, so they require electricity to make calls.  It’s a good idea to have a backup system in place in the event of system interruptions.  Many business phone system providers recommend this, and some even include backup solutions as part of a service package.  Make sure to ask if there are any systems in place to protect your service in the event of a power outage.

    Packet Loss

Packet loss can occur when there is too much traffic on a particular computer network.  Packet loss can result in dropped calls, or a “static,” or broken-up sound in phone conversations.  Packet loss can be easily avoided by upgrading your internet connection before you install the system. Vendors usually test a connection before a system is installed, taking your call volume into account.

    Security and Emergency Concerns

Since it is easier to “hack” or eavesdrop on VoIP phone service calls than on traditional calls, security and emergency concerns are paramount when it comes to choosing a system and a vendor.  Most vendors have specific security plans in place that can’t be changed or adjusted, so make sure you’re satisfied with the level of protection you’ll be provided with.

Emergency concerns relate mostly to the ability to make 911 calls.  911 calls made from traditional phones, can be tracked, because the number has a geographic origin.  VoIP calls can’t be tracked, even by emergency service providers.  Most providers suggest a backup landline if this is a concern.  Some offer E911, E911 or Enhanced 911, an advanced feature that allows police, firefighters, and other emergency service providers to track 9111 calls made from a VoIP phone.
