3. What you Need to Know Before Switching
-
VoIP phone systems are relatively simple and inexpensive to install. If you are switching from a traditional “landline” system (like a KSU or PBX system), VoIP service providers can usually have the new system up and running within a couple weeks. For those businesses setting up a system for the first time, or those moving to a new office- you’ve picked a great time to shop- you’ll be able to order equipment that makes the system even less expensive overall.
VoIP phone systems basically requires these things:
1. A High Speed Internet Connection. After all, you’ll be suing the internet to make and receive calls. System providers can test your connection and make sure it’s fast enough to handle the additional traffic that call volume will create. It helps if you have a good idea of your typical phone usage- that way you can determine exactly how fast the connection needs to be and make any necessary adjustments.
2. VoIP Adapters. Of course, you can always choose to take calls using computer speakers or an attached headset (many businesses do). But if you plan on using traditional phone headsets, or if you already have some, you’ll probably want to look in to purchasing VoIP adaptors, which cost about $30-$50 each.

3. VoIP Phones. While Voice over IP phones are more expensive, theyare very a good investment if you plan to use the system for severalyears. VoIP phones are easy to use, and they’re designed to work with internet based systems- making them a better fit for your system than a simple adaptor. Most run upwards of several hundred dollars each, depending on the model you choose.
VoIP providers provide price quotes for equipment, such as phones or adapters, and can make suggestions for adjustments – for example, if you need to improve your internet connection or switch internet service providers. Once you have the equipment you need and a connection that works, you can have the system installed and begin to use it.
