3. POS Software Options
The software your POS systems use is very important. It determines how transactions are recorded, processed and reported, and determines the type of hardware you will need. Simple POS software functions like a cash register- processing transactions and recording sales. If you want to take advantage of inventory management and sales tracking functions, you’ll need a more advanced program.
Linking to a Merchant Account
If you accept credit cards, it’s a good idea to choose POS software that can link to your merchant services account. This way, there’s no need for a separate credit card terminal- you can have a swipe machine installed directly on the POS terminal. Ask POS vendors for programs that allow for POS credit card processing.
Industry Specific Software
Ask vendors about software specifically designed for your industry, or which programs are a common choice for businesses in your line of work. Software programs are usually designed with a specific type of business in mind. For example, gym or salon software will allow scheduling functions for classes or appointments. Restaurant or bar software is often designed to work with complementary hardware, such as pour-tracking caps for alcohol bottles. Asking about industry-specific software is a good place to start when shopping for a new POS system.
Hardware Compatibility
Compatibility is probably the most common problems business owners encounter when switching to a new POS system. Even if you’re buying a system for the first time, it’s important to make sure the hardware and software work together. Always decide on software first, and then shop for things like scanners and touch screens. Don’t choose your software based on the hardware you already have or want to use.
Ease of Use
Probably one of the most important aspects of a software purchase is how it works. If it’s tough to figure out or had to use, employees won’t use it the way it was designed to work- negating the purpose of having a POS system in the first place. The software should make processes like ringing up a transaction or checking inventory easier than the system you currently have in place. Not sure about a program? Ask for a free trial or demo- most vendors are happy to show you all the features you’ll be able to use.
